Before you perform the test, remember that there are many issues beyond the capacity of the network that can affect your transfer rate (bandwidth).

Keep in mind that there are many factors in addition to network capacity that can affect your broadband speed. Examples of such factors could be your computer's performance, any viruses on your computer and external devices such as a router.

Before you perform the speed test, check the following:

1. Your computer must be directly connected with a network cable to your network socket. You may not have any other equipment connected between the computer and the socket (eg a router or IP telephony devicve).

2. If you run demanding applications on your computer, such as file sharing programs, make sure that they are not running while performing the speed test.

3. If you have a software firewall, shut it down while performing the test.
